A Guide to Using SMT Prototype Stencils

The electronics industry has largely replaced the through-hole method of printed circuit board construction with the surface mount technology or SMT method. The SMT method uses a metal stencil to lay solder paste onto the surface of a board instead of using the insertion of component leads into pre-drilled holes.

Advantages of SMT Stencils
Some of the advantages of using SMT stencils include:

- Smaller components can be used

- Most SMCs are less expensive that through hole components

- Assembly can be more easily automated

- SMDs can be placed on both sides of the board

- Better performance from high frequency parts

Using SMT Prototype Stencils

SMT stencils are quickly replacing traditional prototyping tools like breadboards for printed circuit board design and construction.

The general process for using a prototype stencil is described below:

1. Use a right angle frame and secure your board to a work surface. Be sure that nothing is overlapping the board’s surface.

2. After aligning the stencil over the SMT pads, use some tape to secure it

3. Apply a bead of solder paste along one side of the prototype stencil

4. Use a squeegee and make a single pass over the solder apertures to apply the solder paste

5. Remove the stencil from the board

6. Place your components in the paste

7. Use your manufacturers preferred method to heat the board for re-flow solder
